A Brief History of KULTURA and the Academy of Cultural Education (ACE)
On September 25, 2011, an educational initiative was launched to promote Baybayin, the ancient writing system of the Philippines, through a Facebook page titled A Primer to the Ancient Filipino Script. What began as a digital advocacy project gradually evolved into KULTURA, a cultural education program under Riverboy Studios, founded by Filipino educator and cultural researcher Allan Torres Camba.
From 2015 onward, Allan conducted lectures and workshops on Baybayin, Philippine history, and cultural literacy with diverse audiences, including college students at the University of Washington and Harvard University, as well as elementary and high school students in Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija. These engagements laid the groundwork for a broader vision of culturally grounded education that connects heritage, identity, and learning.
During the global lockdowns of 2020, KULTURA expanded its reach through digital platforms. On May 25, 2020, it launched an online lecture titled Baybayin: During and Since the Spanish Colonial Period. This initiative marked the beginning of a series of online programs that culminated in the launch of Baybayin 101, an intensive online course held from July 6 to July 24, 2020. The course consisted of 12 lectures over three weeks, with weekday sessions offered in both morning and evening schedules. The program concluded with a virtual commencement ceremony and drew 961 registrants, approximately 85% of whom were professional educators, alongside students and cultural learners from various backgrounds.
In recognition of its academic rigor and contribution to professional learning, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) of the Philippines approved Riverboy Studios as a Professional Continuing Education (PCE) provider on November 19, 2020. Following this accreditation, KULTURA began offering structured programs such as Baybayin 101 and Baybayin 200, providing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units to licensed teachers in the Philippines.
As KULTURA continued to grow, its educational mission expanded beyond single programs into a more holistic framework. This evolution led to the establishment of the Academy of Cultural Education (ACE)—the formal educational arm of Riverboy Studios dedicated to character-driven, culturally grounded, and interdisciplinary learning. ACE now serves as the institutional home for KULTURA and related programs, integrating cultural education, research, creative practice, and service-oriented learning for local and international communities.
Together, KULTURA and the Academy of Cultural Education (ACE) represent Riverboy Studios’ enduring commitment to preserving heritage, cultivating character, and fostering meaningful education—where culture is not only studied, but lived, taught, and shared.
